Don "The Snake" Prudhomme is a living legend. For more than 35 years, he has been a constant threat in the Top Fuel wars, switching back and forth between Top Fuel Dragsters and Fuel Funny Cars but back in 1969, things were very different. This car was a state of the art, front engine Top Fueler. The "Wynn's Winder," was a no nonsense race car, stripped to the bone and very quick. Notice the beautiful brushed aluminum wind screen. This is before the days of rear engines and big wings.... all that horse power right in your face.
#129. 1970: Famous NHRA Top Fuel Indy Race, Snake vs. Nicoll
Here's one picturing one of the most thrilling and terrifying races in Drag Racing History. It shows Jim Nicoll's front engine Top Fueler at half track, slightly ahead of Don Prudhomme and just a second before Nicoll's horrific clutch explosion in the lights. This historically important image was captured at the NHRA Summer Nationals at Indianapolis, Indiana in September, 1970.
The web page devoted to the annual Indy Drag Race (www.USNationals.com) names this moment number 1 in its (top 40 unforgettable moments) and says, "#1. 1970: There's never been anything like it. A clutch explosion puts Jim Nicoll over the guardrail at 225 mph while his engine and the other half of his slingshot dragster slide hundreds of feet after a close 6.45 to 6.48 loss to Don Prudhomme in the most important race of the year, the Indy Top Fuel final."
#164: 1971 F/C: "The Snake" Prudhomme - Hot Wheels Burnout

This image was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on August 15, 1971.This low resolution Net image doesn't do the print justice. The car is extremely sharp and the background is very blurred. This special Sunday at the drags featured a whole slew of top quality Nitro powered Funny Cars, racing for a nice AHRA purse and of course, bragging rights.
This Don Prudhomme car marked a new marketing approach by the Mattel Company. The other half of this marketing strategy featured Tom "Mongoose" McEwen's flopper. These two "Mattel Hot Wheels" cars were instant hits as miniature toy cars and Mattel must have sold about a gajillion of the cool little things. The Snake's full sized version was a serious and nasty bad race car.
#214: 1971 F/C: "The Snake" Prudhomme - Hot Wheels At Speed

In July 1973, Dragway 42 hosted a AHRA summer event featuring a bunch of big names. This is the 1973 version of Don's long line of Plymouth floppers, still carrying the "Hot Wheels" logo. This was a state of the art car in 1973.
#307: 1973 F/C: Don "The Snake" Prudhomme at speed
Here's another great image from the same race as above (extremely sharp with a exceptional feeling of speed. Here we see The Snake a few feet past the finish line, throttle closed, the drag shoot about to pop, but still making big numbers. At that point in Drag Racing history, the fastest Fuel Funnies were running close to 220 M.P.H. Notice the rear tire growth and distortion. In this photograph you can clearly see the slick growing away from the outer rim of the wheel. The hood is also being crushed with down force.
