#238: 1969 F/C: Fast Eddie Schartman - Launch

Early Flopper fans: Here's a rare one. In This image we see the factory backed Mercury Cougar Funny Car "Air Lift Rattler," driven by Fast Eddie Schartman. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on August 9, 1969.

The match race of the evening featured two Floppers, Fast Eddie's Cougar against Jungle Jim's Chevy 2. Here we see Eddie on his second spinning launch through the powdered rosin. Notice the unusual headers, very long with upturned ends. Also notice the scorch marks on the body. These early Funny Cars burnt the paint off the doors on a regular basis. Schartman didn't spend much time in Funny Cars. He switched to Pro Stock in 1970, making this image even more rare.

#191: 1971 P/S: Fast Eddie Schartman's Comet - Burnout

Here's one picturing the Factory backed Mercury Comet Pro Stocker driven by Fast Eddie Schartman. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on June 2, 1971. At this point in Drag Racing history, the Ford Motor Company had high hopes for their relatively new Boss 429. Here we see a youthful Fast Eddie, smoldering the slicks on the beautiful Comet. Eddie Schartman got his nick name because he was truly, "Fast."

#239: 1972 P/S: Fast Eddie Schartman's Maverick - Burnout

Ford Pro Stock Fans: This is the legendary Fast Eddie Schartman heating the slicks on his Ford Maverick Pro Stocker. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on July 3, 1972.

A large group of quality Pro Stockers competed in the annual, "Thompson 4th of July Weekend Pro Stock Race." The teams arrived early and tuned up in the afternoon for the evening race. Here we see Factory backed, multicolored Maverick as Schartman prepares for the first round of eliminations. Eddie and the Boss 429 were always a threat.

#202: 1973 P/S: Fast Eddie Schartman Launching Maverick

Pro Stock fans: Here's one from another angle picturing Fast Eddie laying down a traction path through powdered rosin. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on Sunday, April 15, 1973. This image was created at Thompson on the opening day of the 1973 season.

The match race of the day featured Akron Arlen Vanke's factory backed Plymouth verses Fast Eddie's brand new factory backed Maverick. The yellow and blue checkerboard graphics were unique and this car proved to be very popular. Here we see Eddie on his second pass through the rosin, slicks spinning, front wheels just off the ground. At that time the top Pro Stock cars were running in the 9.80's at about 150 MPH.
