#111: 1970 P/S: Dyno Don Nicholson - In The Burnout Zone
This image was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway on August 26, 1970. Dyno Don Nicholson is a living legend, one of the most successful drag racers of all time. The match race of the evening featured a whole slew of Pro Stock Cars. Here we see Don smoldering the slicks in his Pro Stock Maverick. Don marched through the field and won the final race with a hole shot against the national record holding, Hutter and Valerio Camaro.
In this detail image, Don can be clearly seen through the windshield, definitely in a mental zone, just feeling the burnout .
#233: 1970 P/S: Dyno Don Nicholson's Maverick - Side
Pro Stock fans: This one was captured at the same Thompson Match race (August 26, 1970). Here we see Don really getting hold of the track on his second launch through the powdered rosin.
#234: 1970 P/S: Dyno Don Nicholson's Maverick - Driver's Side
Another from the same night (August 26, 1970). In this photograph, a smiling Don can be clearly seen through the drivers window. Notice the extreme rear tire distortion.
#121. 1971 P/S Race: Sox & Martin vs Dyno Don Nicholson
This image pictures a typical P/S launch between two Drag Racing legends, Ronnie Sox and Dyno Don Nicholson. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on August 25, 1971. The match race of the evening featured a bunch of big name pro stockers. Notice the powdered rosin on the starting line and the traction paths. Both cars have the front wheels in the air and are dead even. Notice the extreme rear tire distortion on the Sox and Martin Plymouth. The rear wheel is totally buried in the lower back of the ballooning slick.
#230. 1971 P/S: DR Personality: Don Nicholson - Dusting Rosin

#293: 1972 P/S: Kendig Dyno Don - Burnout
Here's a Dyno Don Burnout (Thompson Drag Raceway July 28, 1972). The driver can be clearly seen through the window as he as he warms the tires. The featured match race of the evening paired Billy The Kid, Barry Setzer, Sox and Martin, and Dyno Don.
#119. 1972 P/S: Kendig Dyno Don - Wheelstand
Here's another one captured at the same race (Thompson Drag Raceway on July 28, 1972). The driver can be clearly seen through the window as he burns through the rosin with the front wheels in the air. At that time, the use of powder rosin was a ritual of match racing. The drivers would spin the slicks through a thin dusting of the stuff which increased traction (notice the tire distortion). This is the second launch through the rosin (the first traction path can be seen under the car). In 1972, Pro Stock drag racing cars ran in the 9.80's (plus or minus) and attained speeds in the 145 to 155 mph range. The featured match race of the evening paired Billy The Kid, Barry Setzer, Sox and Martin, and Dyno Don.
#292. 1972 P/S Race: Sox & Martin vs Kendig Dyno Don
The featured match race of the evening paired Billy The Kid, Barry Setzer, Sox and Martin, and Dyno Don (Thompson Drag Raceway, July 28, 1972). This image pictures a classic manufactures duel (The Dyno Don Ford Maverick verses The Sox and Martin Plymouth Duster) Here we see the Maverick with a few feet up on the Duster and wheels in the air. Once more, Gilchrist's timing is incredible, the race action perfectly illustrated with a great sense of sharpness, speed and composition.
#192: 1972 P/S: Kendig Don Don - Launch
Here we see the famous Dyno Don Nicholson carrying the front wheels in his factory backed Pro Stock Ford Pinto. It was captured at the 1972 IHRA Summer Nationals held at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on August 20, 1972. In this print we see Don through the side window, wheels in the air and out in front of an unidentified competitor who's wheels are also off the ground. At this point in Drag Racing history (1972) Pro Stockers were getting smaller and and more difficult to keep pointed straight.
#200: 1973 P/S: Travelite Dyno Don - Big Wheelstand
This one pictures the infamous Dyno Don, launching his Ford SOHC 427 powered Pro Stock Pinto. It was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on June 24, 1973. Dragway 42 hosted a special race featuring a large field of top name Pro Stockers. Dyno Do Nicholson was already a drag racing legend in 1973. This short wheel base Pinto Pro Stocker really transferred the weight. Here we see Don spinning the wheels and climbing the pinion on another strong pass.
#235: 1980 P/S: Dyno Don Nicholson's Mustang II - Lanch
Pro Stock fans: Here's Dyno Don Nicholson launching his Pro Stock Mustang II. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway on July 3, 1980. Thompson Drag Raceway had a long July 4th Pro Stock tradition. The giant match race of 1980 featured a whole slew of big name Pro Stockers. In this photograph, Dyno Don appears to have gotten a huge holeshot on Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins but in reality, Grumpy broke the drive train which made him even grumpier. If you look carefully at this original print you can see Don with a big smile as he already knows the race is his.
