The Bob Glidden Pro Stock Gallery
Pro Stock fans: Here's the legendary Bob Glidden, launching his factory backed, Ford powered Pro Stock Pinto, wheels hanging in the air. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on July 3, 1976.
#151: 1976 P/S: Bob Glidden Launching The #1 Pinto
On a warm Saturday night, a giant crowd gathered at Thompson to celebrate the country's 200th birthday and at the same time, witness a large field of famous Pro Stockers in action. Here we see Glidden as he lifts the front wheels of his patriotic Ford Pro Stocker on his second blip through the powdered rosin. When this image was captured (1976) Bob Glidden was becoming a drag racing icon, the perennial National Champion..
Here's another extremely sharp image of the Red, White, and Blue Pinto (lots of crisp detail) captured at the same Bicentennial celebration at Thompson.
Drag Racing has always been a family sport and Bob Glidden's family was no exception. That's Bob's wife and crew chief holding the car in the bleach box as Bob begins his burnout with the front brakes locked. If you look closely you can just see a small head, barely showing above the roof. We believe that's Bob's son, holding the car in place from the other side.
Bob Glidden was an intense competitor, a perennial NHRA National Champion and one of the greatest drivers of all time. Notice the concentration on Bob's "Race Face" as we stares at the tachometer, total focus, in the "Burnout Zone" (see detail).
Bob Glidden was also a mechanical genius, building very trick Cleveland 351 small block Ford engines, bored and stroked to around 400 cubic inches.
This image was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on July 3, 1980. This low resolution Net image doesn't do the print justice (car very sharp, background and wheels very blurred). The Photograph was created at dusk on the first round qualifying pass. The match race of the evening featured a bunch of big name factory backed Pro Stockers. Here we see Bob (carrying #1 Pro on the side window) approaching half track at about 140 MPH....a beautiful feeling of speed. Bob Glidden's Fords were Trick!
