#229. 1969 F/C: Jungle Jim Liberman - Burnout (Side)
Early Flopper fans: Here's a rare one. This image pictures the infamous Jungle Jim Liberman heating the slicks on his Chevy 2 Funny Car. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on August 9, 1969. The hand crafted print is titled and signed by the artist in black ink.
The match race of the evening featured two Floppers, Fast Eddie's Cougar against Jungle Jim's Chevy 2. There were only a handful of Chevy 2 Funny Cars ever created. Here we see a Jungle Jim burnout. Schartman can be seen in the other lane doing the same thing. Notice the relatively crude and simple roll cage. Funny Cars were just beginning to evolve and this was before the days of big dollar corporate involvement. This was also before the days of Jungle Pam. Liberman went on to become one of the most popular Funny Car drivers ever, always the consummate showman.
#144. 1973: Jungle Jim Liberman - Burnout (Side)
These next four images were captured at the same event, May 20 -24,1973, captured from the side, from the front, and from the side, back..
A lot of big names were at Dragway 42 for the 1973 AHRA National event. In the side image we see Jim's famous flopper boiling the hides on another huge burnout, the background obliterated by his competitors burnout in the other lane. Notice the cool louvered aluminum panel designed to strengthen the ultra light body. "Jungle Jim" Liberman was a tremendous showman and always had his foot on the floor. He was a match race monster and won a bunch of races coast to coast. Not be be out done by the Mattel "Hot Wheels" cars, the Ravell corporation joined in and sponsored Liberman's Funny Car efforts to promote their own model car scheme. Many thousands of hobbyists built Ravell's "Jungle Jim" model.
#240. 1973 Racing Personalities: Cha Cha, Jungle Jim and Jungle Pam
Here's an image picturing three Drag Racing Icons in the same image.... "Jungle Pam" Hardy, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney. It was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on May 24, 1973. This low resolution Net image doesn't do the print justice (very sharp with a full range of tones). A lot of big names were at Dragway 42 for an AHRA National event. Here we see the three huge stars involved in a starting line debate. We have no idea what they are discussing but Shirley looks a little irritated while Jim and Pam seem to be listening intently (interesting body language). You could spend weeks making up captions for this one.
#145. 1973: Fuel Funny Car, Jungle Jim Liberman - Burnout (Front)
Another hard burnout. This front image was taken late in the day and is very sharp, a strong cross light beautifully modeling Jim's Chevy Flopper. "Jungle Jim" Liberman was a tremendous showman and always had his foot on the floor. He was a match race monster and won a bunch of races coast to coast. Notice the 200 MPH tape, a temporary fix for a crack in the fragile fiberglass. At that point in Drag Racing History, most teams didn't carry spare bodies. These guys just patched it up and if the thing would run, they would race it.
#228. 1973 FC: Jungle Jim Liberman - Launch (Side)
Here's another one ( from another angle) taken at the same four day event. This is a first round qualifying pass, captured at dusk.
#246. 1973 FC: Jungle Jim Liberman - Burnout
